We both embraced the creative challenge, but I'm pretty sure the Omnivore won this event. (Not that we're keeping score.)
So here's what he got for me (photo at left): An amazing indoor window herb garden. He started seedlings in cute little teacups and transplanted bigger plants into pretty pots. The teacups and pots all came from Goodwill, mind you.
It's so fabulous to see green, living things thriving in the middle of the long, cold winter!
You can see why I think he won this challenge.
Nonetheless, they were fun to make, and I think he'll enjoy them.
The first is a BBQ rub. I used a recipe I found on Pinterest. It has ground coffee in it (plus lots of other good stuff -- but no preservatives or words I can't pronounce!) and it smells delicious. I'm excited for him to try it and see what he thinks.

The Omnivore suffers from dry hands in the winter, so this should help with that. He also is a big fan of foot massages, so I might try using this when I give those toes some love.
DIY Coconut Oil-Grapefruit Lotion
To make it, I melted half a jar of organic coconut oil on low in a pan on the stove. Then I poured it, 1/4 the total at a time, into a Mason jar. After pouring each bit, I added about 12 drops of grapefruit essential oil and swished the jar in a circle a few times to combine it. You'll want to give it about a day to cool and harden. (Note: Don't be alarmed if it looks a little weird after the first few hours -- it hardens slowly and looks like it's separating but should solidify into a pretty uniform, solid lotion. The lotion then melts when you apply it.)
Well, it's been a busy but good 2013 in our household. I'm again reminded how blessed I am to have a wonderful husband and lots of other fabulous people in my life.
Wishing you happy holidays and a spectacular 2014!
